RCD Testing Perth Overview

RCD testing is the procedure to check if your residual current device (RCD) is in good condition. Residual current devices are essential safety devices which are used to protect people from electric shock. To ensure the continued effectiveness of RCDs and provide the highest level of safety, it is important that they are regularly tested and tagged. At Electrical Test and Tag Perth, we can test RCD devices to ensure correct operation.

What is a RCD?

Residual current devices (RCDs) are safety devices that protect people from electric shocks. RCDs can be found in many electrical installations, such as in residential homes and commercial properties. They are designed to detect any leakage of electrical current, and to switch off the electricity supply in the event of a fault. Residual Current Devices (RCDs) testing and tagging is a process that ensures the safety of electrical installations and appliances by testing and identifying any potential electrical hazards. This testing is carried out to identify any potential electrical faults that may cause harm to personnel and property.

The RCD Testing and Tagging Process

Testing and tagging RCDs tests the device for correct operation. This involves injecting fault current into the circuit to determine whether the device functions correctly and responds to a fault in an appropriate manner. This test is done using both the test button and an RCD tester, where the test button test simulates an imbalance in currents, while the RCD tester test measures how quickly the device can trip when there is a difference in the incoming and outgoing currents.

All RCD Testing should be carried out by a qualified individual using a specialist testing machine. After the correct operation of the RCD has been confirmed, a label is attached in the breaker box to the RCD circuit so that it is clearly visible. The label is updated with details of any subsequent tests. Regular RCD testing is important to ensure the safety of your electrical systems and to prevent potential risks such as electric shock, electric burn, electrical explosion, and fire initiated by electricity.

Portable RCD Testing Perth WA

Portable RCDs

Portable RCDs are often found in workshops or on construction sites.

For portable RCDs, the process involves a visual inspection of the device, followed by a series of tests to measure the electrical characteristics of the device. Tests are performed to ensure the device is operating correctly, and to detect any potential faults. The visual inspection is used to check the physical condition of the device and ensure that it is in proper working order. This includes checking for any visible signs of damage or wear and tear, such as loose connections, damaged wiring, or any other indicators of a potential fault. Once the visual inspection is complete, the testing and tagging process begins. The testing involves measuring the current and voltage of the device to ensure it is operating correctly. This is done with specialized testing equipment which is designed to measure the electrical characteristics of the device. The device is tested in a variety of conditions and the results are compared to the manufacturer’s specifications.

If any of the readings fall outside of the manufacturer’s specifications, the device is deemed to be faulty and must be replaced. Once the testing is complete, the device is tagged with a warning label to indicate the presence of a potential electrical hazard. This label is usually a bright orange colour and contains information about the device and the potential hazard. It is important that the label is clearly visible to ensure that personnel are aware of the potential hazard and do not place the device back into service.
